Research done for Motionary

During my process of recording for Motionary, I filmed over 50 different performers and over 500 word interpretations. Performers’ ages varied from a three-year old boy through teenagers, students in their twenties to adult actors in their fifties. I recorded many individual and group performances. The performers came from different countries; some of them spoke their native language to teach pronunciation. Most people improvised for the first time in their lives, others were professional actors. I recorded performances in different locations and with a different background. Most Motionary performances lasted at least 4 seconds but others were longer than 30 seconds. Actors utilized a variety of moves, gestures and facial expressions.   Motionary is based on a simple but at the same time quite complex idea.

I think the Motionary concept can be researched further in countless different directions. One of the most important researches that can be done in the future is: language acquisition, social interaction and body language. During my thesis research, I concentrated mostly on filming, experimenting, observing and interviewing participants.

Shoot a short visually-performed definition of one words listed below for a chance to win $50.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.

Official Rules

Grand prize is $50 CASH.

Entry:

1) Choose – Select one or more of the following words*

- Visualization

- Narrative

- Sensors

- Gesture

2) Think - Consider how you would express the meaning of the word without speaking.

3) Shoot - Turn on the video camera and record you and or your friends performing the meaning of the word. Number of People/Actors: Unlimited

4) Email Notification- Please send contest entry with the following information via email to: agata@motionary.org

- Copyright Releases**

- Link to you Motionary performance on YouTube

* To qualify for contest you must perform one or all of these words. Other word submissions will not be accepted.

Judging

All video submission will be judged on believability, clarity, cleverness and expression. The winning improvisation will be selected on the following basis:

75 points - YouTube user ratings

25 points - Four selected Motionary judges

Video Format specification:

- Upload video to Youtube

- Name your upload: “Motionary-[WORD]”

- Use white or plain background

- No sound

- No written messages

Deadline:

All entries must be uploaded to You Tube by Monday, April 20, 2009.

Winner(s) will be announced at www.motionary.org on April 22, 2009 and the winner will receive notification email.

Format: Entries must be submitted as videos on YouTube and named “Motionary-improvised word”

** Winning Improvisation will be featured on the Motionary’s website and other related print and electronic media.

Motionary.org reserves the right to use any or all entries for educational purpose

FYI: This is rough sketch because I have limited time and I just want to get the idea to the word.

(I’ll fix the movie proportions and ad more great performances to the collection soon.
I don’t really like how this display looks (but it works) - this is the best I can do for now.)

The idea for Motionary was inspired by this poem by William Carlos Williams:
